A coral is not one organism pretending to be two. It is two organisms that have agreed, for now, to act like one. The polyp builds the structure and does the hunting; the algae living inside its tissue do the photosynthesis and hand over most of the sugar they make. Neither side owns the other. Neither side can survive long without the other, either - which is exactly what makes it a deal and not a takeover. A researcher who studies these partnerships for a living has described the coral's whole situation, precisely, as managing a symbiotic alga “that may or may not want to cooperate.”1 That phrase is doing more work than it looks like it's doing. It says the arrangement is live, provisional, and can fail - which is a strange thing to be true of something that's been running, in some form, for the coral's entire evolutionary history. An agreement that old still has to be honored fresh, every day, by both sides, or it stops.
Zoom in further and the same shape repeats at a level with no algae in it at all. Every cell in your body is, in a sense, honoring a deal it didn't personally negotiate: divide when the tissue needs you to, stop when it doesn't, die on schedule if you're damaged beyond repair, and never, under any circumstances, act like you're the only cell that matters. Athena Aktipis, who came to cancer research from studying cooperation and cheating in human groups, calls this set of rules the multicellularity playbook - the pact every cell in a body is implicitly bound by.2 Cancer, in her framing, is not damage in the way a scratch or a fracture is damage. It's a cell that has stopped following the playbook - reproducing without limit, refusing to die on schedule, hoarding resources the way an organism would if it were still competing alone. She calls it, without much hedging, cheating.
It's tempting to say these cells are reverting to some older, more primitive version of themselves, and there's a real scientific theory that says something close to that - cancer cells do tend to switch on genes that are evolutionarily ancient, dating back to around the origin of multicellular life, while switching off the newer genes that keep cooperation running.3 But the more precise way to say it isn't that the cell has an older lineage than its neighbors. Every cell in the body shares the same lineage, back to the same fertilized egg. What's changed is which level the cell is behaving as though it belongs to. Natural selection only ever really applies to a population - an individual doesn't evolve, a lineage's numbers shift across generations, and you cannot have selection with a population of one.4 For most of a cell's evolutionary history, the population being selected was a population of individual free-living cells, each fending for itself. Multicellularity is what happens when that arrangement gets renegotiated: selection starts acting on the whole organism instead, and every cell inside it has to give up some of its own reproductive freedom for the deal to hold. A cancer cell hasn't traveled back in time. It's defected from a level of cooperation the rest of its neighbors are still honoring, back down to the level the deal was originally struck to replace.
So there is, running underneath the coral and underneath the cell, a genuinely old and genuinely general phenomenon: an arrangement that benefits both sides only as long as both sides keep to it, with no external enforcer, no contract, nothing written down anywhere - and a live possibility, always, that one side stops.
Somewhere far downstream of all that, a species shows up that has a very specific, very expensive way of noticing when the other side has stopped keeping to the deal. We call it anger, and it's tempting to treat it as noise - an emotional overreaction to be managed rather than a signal to be read. The evolutionary psychologists who've studied it most carefully describe something more precise: anger functions to bargain for better treatment, and its trigger is remarkably specific. It fires when you register that someone else isn't weighting your welfare heavily enough in their own decisions - technically, that their “welfare tradeoff ratio” toward you has dropped too low.5 That is, more or less exactly, what it feels like to discover that a deal you thought was mutual has quietly stopped being mutual on the other end. Anger is the felt, in-the-room version of the same enforcement problem a coral solves chemically and a body solves through apoptosis. It's how you recalibrate a cheater when you're still close enough to be heard.
A merchant in Kanesh, in central Anatolia, four thousand years ago, was trading tin and textiles with partners who lived weeks of donkey-caravan travel away and whom he might never see again after the goods changed hands. He could not get angry at the right moment in the right room, because there wasn't going to be a room. What survives from that world - more than twenty thousand clay tablets, sealed inside clay envelopes, some of them still unopened when they were rediscovered - is almost entirely business correspondence: loans, partnership agreements, and something called a naruqqum, a formal joint-stock arrangement where investors pooled capital and shared the risk and the return, in writing, with named terms.6 One surviving marriage contract from the same archive specifies exactly what happens if the couple doesn't conceive within two years - including a surrogacy arrangement and a divorce penalty payable in silver.7 These are not primitive documents groping toward the idea of an agreement. They are the idea of an agreement, fully formed, doing a very specific job: standing in for the enforcement that anger and proximity used to provide, now that the parties can no longer count on staying close enough to feel each other's anger at all.
Go back further and writing itself seems to have been invented for approximately this reason before it was used for anything else. The earliest proto-cuneiform tablets, centuries before anyone wrote a story or a law in the modern sense, are inventories and receipts - a record that an exchange happened, nothing more.8 The deal came first. Language describing the deal came after. And when rulers eventually got around to writing formal law codes - Ur-Nammu's, three centuries before the more famous Code of Hammurabi - they were mostly writing down customary arrangements merchants and families had already been striking on their own for generations.9 The code didn't invent the deal. It showed up late, and took credit.
None of this makes a modern comp plan or a signed enterprise contract into a museum piece. It makes it the current end of a single, continuous project: finding a way to make an agreement hold when the two parties honoring it are not going to stay close enough, for long enough, to enforce it the way a body enforces cooperation among its own cells, or the way anger enforces it between two people who are still in the same room. The coral's algae and the cell's neighbors don't need paperwork. They're never far enough apart to need it. The moment any two parties in a deal are far enough apart - geographically, temporally, organizationally - paperwork is the only thing left standing in for the felt, immediate correction that used to do the job for free.
